What is Quimbee?

Put simply, Quimbee is a database for case summaries.

Mission

We aspire to build a database of case summaries for every casebook used in law schools throughout the United States.

History

Founded by Matt Sellers in the fall of 2006, Quimbee had its start as a user-generated database. The hope was that altruistic users would upload their case summaries to the site for free. Unsurprisingly, this idea failed. But out of that failure we learned an important lesson: you shouldn't expect educated people to impart their legal knowledge for free. Today, Quimbee is smarter than it once was. And we have your feedback to thank for it.

Philosophy

Understanding the import of a case can be a grueling undertaking, even for a legal professional. Identifying the facts, issue and holding of a case is a crucial first step in understanding the meaning of a case and is a pedagogical tool used in law schools throughout the United States. Because the English-speaking world embraces a common law legal system, our laws are interpreted and applied by judges. Judges often use legal terms and concepts in their written opinions that can be confusing, resulting in an information gap between the general public and the laws that govern them. Quimbee represents an effort to simplify and democratize case law by providing easy to understand case summaries at no charge to our users.

Strategy

Writing a case summary is a skill. The case briefer must not only identify the key information in a case, but must also synthesize this information into something the uninitiated reader will understand. That is why Quimbee offers to pay for every case submitted through our requested cases page or for every case brief uploaded to the site in a file. All submissions must generally conform to our standards of quality. Paying for case summaries allows us to choose the ones that we need. But before submitting a case summary, please carefully review our terms.
