In this lesson, we’ll learn about judgments as a matter of law and motions for new trials.

A party can move for judgment as a matter of law, or JMOL, either during trial or after trial. The motion asks the court to bypass the jury and enter judgment for the moving party on a particular issue, claim, or defense.

A judgment as a matter of law replaces two older procedures, the directed verdict and the judgment notwithstanding the verdict. In a directed verdict, the judge would tell the jury...
