Definition

A regional human-rights tribunal that interprets and applies the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Through its contentious function, the court assesses violations of the charter. The court also issues advisory opinions. The African Commission on Human Rights (ACHPR) is the treaty body that monitors compliance with the charter.
