Community-Caretaking Exception

Definition

Articulated by the Supreme Court in Cady v. Dombrowski, 413 U.S. 433 (1973), an exception to the warrant requirement that permits police officers to perform warrantless searches to aid people in danger of physical harm, preserve property, and create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.
