Term used by juvenile courts to designate a child in need of state intervention. Reasons for the designation may include lack of proper parental care, abandonment, or death of a child’s parents. In many jurisdictions, a finding of deprivation is grounds for the state to take custody of a child and for the state to terminate parental rights.
