Definition

Also known as the church-autonomy doctrine, a common-law doctrine that requires civil courts considering particular legal claims to avoid resolving the religious questions that relate to the claims and instead defer those religious questions to the religious organization’s authority. This doctrine is implicitly based in the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.
