Definition

In civil-law jurisdictions, the portion of an estate that a surviving child may elect to take if the decedent’s will omitted the child or left the child less than he or she would be entitled to under the forced-share statute. Many United States jurisdictions also provide forced shares for surviving spouses, which are typically called elective shares.
