Model Rule of Professional Conduct 5.6

Definition

The ethical rule that governs restrictions on lawyers’ rights to practice. The rule prohibits lawyers from participating in offering or making (a) a partnership, shareholder, operating, employment, or other agreement that restricts a lawyer’s right to practice after the relationship has terminated, except an agreement concerning retirement benefits; or (b) an agreement in which a restriction on the lawyer’s right to practice is part of the settlement of a client controversy.
