Trading Ahead

Trading Ahead

Definition

Prohibited practice in which a specialist puts his interest ahead of the interests of other market participants by putting a principal trade in front of an agency trade. For example, a specialist receives matching buy and sell orders from investors but, instead of matching the orders, fulfills the buy order by selling shares from his firm’s proprietary account and then fills the public customer’s sell order at a lower price.
