Tribal Sovereignty

Definition

The constitutional right of self-determination given to Native Americans and Alaska Natives over internal affairs within tribal territory. Tribal sovereignty can be limited only by treaty, by express congressional override, or by a federal judicial ruling holding that the exercise of certain tribal self-determination powers is subject to, or inconsistent with, federal law.
