Definition

A copyright doctrine stemming from 17 U.S.C. §§ 101 and 201(b) that provides that work created in the scope of an employee’s work belongs to the employer. The doctrine also covers certain types of work created by an independent contractor if the parties have agreed in writing that the contractor's work is work made for hire.
