Facts
Arista Records LLC (Arista) (plaintiff), a consortium of copyright owners and licensees, filed suit against 27 anonymous University of Maine students (defendants), alleging that the students violated copyright laws by downloading and sharing copyrighted songs. The defendants filed motions to dismiss under Rule 12(b)(6), discovery motions, and motions for Rule 11 sanctions. The magistrate judge made a determination on these motions, and the students appealed.
