Attorney General of the Government of Israel v. Eichmann
District Court of Jerusalem
Criminal Case No. 40/61
- Written by Alexander Hager-DeMyer, JD
Facts
Adolf Eichmann (defendant) was a Nazi security-service lieutenant colonel who oversaw the process of gathering European Jews and transporting them to death camps. After World War II, Eichmann fled to Argentina and went into hiding. Years later, Israeli agents tracked down Eichmann and brought him back to Israel for trial. The trial court found Eichmann guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and crimes against the Jewish people, and Eichmann was sentenced to death. In its opinion, the trial court addressed the purpose of criminal trials, especially trials involving major international crimes like those in Eichmann’s case.
