Avni v. State of Israel
Israel Supreme Court
HCJ 6167/09 (2009)
- Written by Whitney Waldenberg, JD
Facts
Avni (plaintiff) did not want to be buried when he died. Instead, Avni wanted his body to be given to animals to provide them food. Avni believed that because humans live and thrive at the expense of animals and plants, he should serve as good for the plants and animals that sustained his life when he died. Avni put these wishes in a will and submitted it to the Ministry of Justice for approval. The Ministry of Justice informed Avni that his will would violate the laws of Israel. Avni submitted a petition to the Israel Supreme Court, sitting as the High Court of Justice in this case, naming the State of Israel (defendant) as defendant, and asking that his wishes be honored.
