District of Columbia Court of Appeals
186 A.3d 1243 (2018)
- Written by Paul Neel, JD
Facts
Jean-Baptiste Bado (defendant) applied for asylum in the US. While his asylum application was pending, the government (plaintiff) charged Bado with misdemeanor sexual abuse of a minor, which subjected him to deportation under US immigration law. Bado pleaded not guilty. The trial court denied Bado’s demand for a jury trial and held a bench trial. Bado was convicted, sentenced to 180 days in jail, fined $50, and ordered to register as a sex offender. The US initiated deportation proceedings. Bado appealed.
