Baker v. State of Vermont
Vermont Supreme Court
744 A.2d 864 (1999)
- Written by Josh Lee, JD
Facts
Three same-sex couples who had lived together in committed relationships for periods ranging between four and 25 years (plaintiffs) sought marriage certificates. Two of the couples had raised children together. In each case, the couples were denied a marriage certificate based on Vermont’s marriage laws. The couples sued, seeking a declaratory judgment that the marriage laws violated the Vermont Constitution. The trial court ruled against the couples, and the couples appealed.
