Facts
Yossi Ben-Ari (plaintiff) along with his husband and four other same-sex couples, all of whom were Israeli citizens, applied to have their marriages, which were performed under Canadian law, registered in the Israeli population registry. The director of Population Administration (defendant) rejected the application on the ground that same-sex marriages were not recognized under Israeli law.
