Blank v. Sullivan & Cromwell
United States District Court for the Southern District of New York
16 Fair Empl. Prac. Cas. (BNA) 87 (1976)
- Written by Alexis Tsotakos, JD
Facts
Several women, including Blank (plaintiff), brought suit against law firm Sullivan & Cromwell (defendant), alleging sex discrimination in hiring in violation of Title VII. The women had applied for associate positions around 1970 and had been rejected. During discovery, Blank filed interrogatories requesting information relating to the number of female and male associates at the firm, the number of female and male partners at the firm, and the number of women and men offered the opportunity to become partner. The court denied Blank this discovery, holding that the information she sought was not relevant to the subject matter of the lawsuit. Blank filed a motion for reconsideration.
