Facts
Edward Bloom (defendant) filed a fake will for probate. The state’s attorney (plaintiff) charged Bloom with criminal contempt based on Bloom’s attempted fraud. Bloom requested a jury, which was denied. Bloom was then found guilty of criminal contempt and sentenced to 24 months of imprisonment. Bloom appealed, and the decision was affirmed. Bloom then appealed to the United States Supreme Court, which granted cert.
