Bloom v. National Collegiate Athletic Association
Colorado Court of Appeals
93 P.3d 621 (2004)
- Written by Craig Conway, LLM
Facts
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) (defendant) rules permitted student-athletes to maintain their amateur status in one sport while competing professionally in a different sport. Jeremy Bloom (plaintiff) was a world-class skier as well as a talented football player. Bloom played football for the University of Colorado (defendant) while skiing professionally. Although Bloom was allowed to keep prize money he earned for skiing, NCAA rules barred him from receiving income for endorsing skiing-related products. Bloom brought suit against the NCAA and the University seeking injunctive relief. The trial court denied Bloom’s request and he appealed.
