Facts
The president of the Massachusetts State Federation of Labor and other union officers (collectively, the union) (plaintiffs) requested a writ of mandamus from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to prevent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from submitting proposed law prohibiting labor unions from making political contributions for public election. The union argued that the proposed law violated the union’s rights of freedom of the press and peaceable assembly.
