Bucklew v. Hawkins, Ash, Baptie & Co., LLP
United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit
329 F.3d 923 (2003)
- Written by Craig Conway, LLM
Facts
Stephen Bucklew (plaintiff) brought a suit against Hawkins, Ash, Baptie & Company, LLP (HAB) (defendants) for copyright infringement and other claims in relation to Housing and Urban Development (HUD) forms. Bucklew claimed copyright solely over the formatting and appearance of the HUD forms, including items such as font size and color, size of cell columns, and wording of labels. The United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin dismissed all but the copyright claim, which was tried by jury and resulted in a verdict in favor of Bucklew that was decreased by the court. Both parties appealed.
