Facts
Costa Rica (plaintiff) and Nicaragua (defendant) had a dispute over the location of their shared border. The Nicaraguan army moved onto land that Costa Rica believed was within Costa Rica’s borders. Costa Rica sued Nicaragua in the International Court of Justice, seeking, among other things, monetary damages for harm to the environment that the Nicaraguan army had caused in the claimed Costa Rican territory. Costa Rica sought over $2 million for loss of timber and other natural resources, degradation of air quality, erosion, and loss of biodiversity, among other things.
