Cha v. Korean Presbyterian Church of Washington
Virginia Supreme Court
262 Va. 604, 553 S.E.2d 511 (2001)
- Written by Sharon Feldman, JD
Facts
Jae-Woo Cha (plaintiff) was a pastor of the Korean Presbyterian Church of Washington (the church) (defendant). There were concerns in the church about financial improprieties. A church deacon told other deacons that Cha had borrowed over $100,000 from believers and had not returned the money. Cha’s employment was terminated. Cha sued the church for wrongful termination of contract and certain church officials (defendants) for interference with contract and defamation. The court granted judgment in favor of the church and held that the court lacked subject-matter jurisdiction to consider Cha’s defamation claims against the individual church officials. Cha appealed.
