Citizens for Strong Schools, Inc. v. Florida State Board of Education
Florida Supreme Court
262 So. 3d 127 (2019)
- Written by Deanna Curl, JD
Facts
In 2009, a group of Florida public-school students, parents, and education organizations (the education advocates) (plaintiff) filed a lawsuit alleging that the state of Florida (defendant) was breaching its constitutional duty to make adequate provisions for a high-quality education under the Florida Constitution. The education advocates requested that the court establish a remedial plan that included studies to determine the necessary resources and standards to comply with the Florida Constitution’s high-quality education requirement. The trial court found that the education advocates’ blanket challenge to the constitutionality of the education system could not be sustained, and the appeals court affirmed the trial-court ruling. The education advocates then appealed.
