The City of Oakland (City) (plaintiff) brought suit against the Oakland Raiders (defendant) seeking an injunction to condemn the team under California’s broad eminent domain statute, and authority to resell the team to a local owner, in order to prevent the Raiders from relocating to Los Angeles. The trial court dismissed the City’s suit and the matter eventually reached the California Supreme Court.
