Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court
35 Mass. 193 (1836)
- Written by Carolyn Strutton, JD
Facts
Mary Slater was a Louisiana resident and a slave owner. Slater traveled to Massachusetts and brought an eight-year-old enslaved girl, Med, with her. A few months after entering Massachusetts, Med remained in the state in the custody of Slater’s agent, Thomas Aves (defendant), who was a Boston resident. A Boston abolitionist obtained a writ of habeas corpus against Aves for holding Med against her will. Aves was summoned to appear before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
