Facts
Edward Hughes (defendant) was indicted for assault with a dangerous weapon. The prosecution (plaintiff) filed a motion to compel Hughes to produce the gun allegedly used in the assault. The prosecution presented evidence that Hughes had registered the gun with the state. The trial court granted the motion. Hughes appealed on the ground that compelling him to produce the gun would violate his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.
