Facts
A Nevada law required railroad and stagecoach companies to collect a one-dollar tax from each person leaving the state via one of their vehicles. Crandall (defendant) refused to collect and remit the tax, and the State of Nevada charged him with violating the law. The United States Supreme Court granted certiorari.
