Facts
E.I. DuPont deNemours, Inc. (DuPont) imported a product called corian, which is used for kitchen countertops and tables. Corian looks like marble but is made up of about two-thirds aluminum hydroxide and one-third polymethyl methacrylate. DuPont wanted the corian to be classified under the tariff heading for artificial stone. The case was referred to the European Court of Justice by a domestic court in the United Kingdom.
