Gulf Marine and Industrial Supplies, Inc. v. Golden Prince M/V
United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit
230 F.3d 178 (2000)

- Written by Alex Ruskell, JD
Facts
Murphy, Rogers & Sloss, APLC (Murphy) (plaintiff) was a law firm that provided legal services to settle claims against the Golden Prince M/V (Golden) (defendant), a vessel. Creditors seized Golden, and Murphy sued under the Federal Maritime Lien Act to attach a lien. Under the act, providers of necessaries to a vessel could secure a lien against that vessel. Golden responded that legal services were not necessaries within the definition of the act. The court ruled in Golden’s favor, and Murphy appealed.
