Haddle was an at-will employee of Healthmaster Home Health Care. He sued his former employer and Garrison (defendant), an officer of Healthmaster, alleging he was wrongfully terminated to discourage his participation as a witness in a criminal trial. The defendants moved to dismiss for failure to state a claim upon which relief can be granted. The court held that the statute under which he sought relief, 42 U.S.C. § 1985(2), precluded relief for an at-will employee, and granted the defendants’ motion to dismiss. Haddle appealed to the court of appeals which upheld the decision of the lower court. The United States Supreme Court granted certiorari.
