Facts
During a federal lawsuit, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee certified a question of Tennessee state law to the Tennessee Supreme Court. The University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK) (defendant) opposed the certified question, arguing that the Tennessee Supreme Court lacked the authority under the Tennessee Constitution to answer certified questions of law.
