Hetes v. Schefman & Miller Law Office
Michigan Court of Appeals
393 N.W.2d 577 (1986)
- Written by Jenny Perry, JD
Facts
Schefman & Miller Law Office (Schefman) (defendant) hired Joan Hetes (plaintiff) as a receptionist. There was no written employment contract, but Hetes stated that Schefman verbally assured her on at least two occasions before she accepted the position that she would have a job as long as her work was satisfactory. Schefman provided Hetes with an office manual that outlined employee responsibilities. The manual did not include termination procedures. Schefman discharged Hetes after less than one year on the job, and Hetes filed a complaint alleging that Schefman breached her employment contract by terminating her employment in bad faith and without just cause. The trial court entered summary judgment in favor of Schefman, and Hetes appealed.
