Facts
Lavinia Goodell (plaintiff) applied for and was denied admission to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The court based its opinion on the fact that the relevant statute only provided for admission of males. Subsequent to the decision, the Wisconsin Legislature enacted legislation stating that “no person shall be denied admission or license to practice as an attorney in any court of this state on account of sex.” Accordingly, the court revisited Goodell’s application.
