Facts
Prior to beginning medical school, Mr. Francis (plaintiff) proposed to Ms. Francis (defendant). While in medical school, Ms. Francis operated a day care from the marital residence, foregoing her career to support Mr. Francis. After being married for six years, Mr. Francis filed for divorce. The trial court awarded Ms. Francis $100,000, accounting for Mr. Francis’ future earning capacity resulting from his medical degree. Mr. Francis petitioned for certiorari to the Supreme Court of Iowa.
