United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana
2012 WL 2236737 MDL No. 2179 (2012)

- Written by Catherine Cotovsky, JD
Facts
A group of plaintiffs filed suit for losses related to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010. The cases were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) and transferred to the Eastern District of Louisiana. The parties reached settlement agreements that would be administered by a court-supervised settlement program. Also, per the terms of the settlement, all common benefit fees and costs would be paid by BP (defendant). The district court granted preliminary certification of a class-action settlement and preliminary approval of the settlement. Shortly thereafter, the court-supervised settlement program began operation, and the court determined that the issue of individual attorney’s fees was ripe for consideration.
