Facts
The statute governing admission of attorneys to the circuit courts of Wisconsin provided that an applicant would be admitted upon examination to the satisfaction of the circuit court judge. Lavinia Goodell (plaintiff) applied for admission to a Wisconsin circuit court. The circuit court examined and ultimately admitted Goodell. Subsequently, Goodell moved for admission to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The text of the statute governing such admission used male pronouns. Goodell argued that the statute should be construed to encompass females, as well.
