Facts
Jay Shawn Johnson (defendant) was convicted of a crime in California. Johnson appealed his conviction, making claims under state and federal law. The California Court of Appeal reversed Johnson’s conviction, holding that Johnson was entitled to relief under federal law. The California Supreme Court reversed the California Court of Appeal, holding that Johnson was not entitled to relief under federal law. The California Supreme Court remanded the case to the California Court of Appeal for further proceedings. Johnson appealed, and the United States Supreme Court granted certiorari.
