Johnson v. PPI Technology Services
United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana
926 F. Supp. 2d 873 (2013)
- Written by Rich Walter, JD
Facts
PPI Technology Services, L.P. (PPI) (defendant) employed James Johnson (plaintiff) to work on a rig anchored off the coast of Nigeria. The rig was guarded by personnel employed by GlobalSantaFe Offshore Services (GSF) (defendant). Johnson was shot and held hostage when pirates overpowered the GSF guards and commandeered the rig. Following his release, Johnson sued PPI and GSF in the federal district court for eastern Louisiana, seeking damages under federal admiralty law. GSF was headquartered abroad but employed 300 Americans, including 40 Louisianians, and paid those employees from a Texas office. GSF argued that these ties were insufficient to bring GSF within the general jurisdiction of either Louisiana or Texas. GSF moved to be dismissed as a defendant.
