Facts
A dispute arose between Kalafrana Shipping Ltd. (Kalafrana) (plaintiff) and Sea Gull Shipping Co. Ltd. (Sea Gull) (defendant) over the sale of a vessel. Kalafrana brought claims against Sea Gull in federal court. The parties stipulated that Kalafrana’s claims were based solely on the contract for the sale of the vessel. The district court needed to determine whether that contract amounted to a maritime contract in order to decide whether the claims fell within federal admiralty jurisdiction.
