M.C. Mehta v. Union of India
India Supreme Court
AIR 1992 SC 382 (1992)
Facts
The Constitution of India placed a duty on each citizen to protect and improve the environment. To increase awareness of this duty and in light of recent environmental disasters such as severe gas leaks with considerable loss of life that involved the Union of India (defendant), M.C. Mehta (plaintiff) filed a writ petition with three requests: (1) require cinemas to show informational slides about the environment, (2) require national radio and television stations to show programs about the importance of environmental protection, and (3) make the environment a compulsory subject in schools and colleges.
