M v. E
Ecclesiastical Court of Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Decision of 20 June 1988, 88 Revista Jurídica de Catalunya: Jurisprudència 521 (1989)
- Written by Curtis Parvin, JD
Facts
M (husband) (plaintiff) and E (wife) (defendant) developed an intimate relationship and moved in together but did not marry. On a trip to Chile due to the death of M’s brother, M’s parents pressured the couple into a civil marriage. When the couple returned to Spain, E’s parents prevailed on them to have a traditional religious marriage. The couple did not have children, nor did they want children. The relationship began to deteriorate when the husband, M, needed to move to Chile for work, and E had difficulty adapting to Chilean customs. The couple separated after two years of marriage, and a few months later, M filed for an annulment. E did not oppose the filing.
