Mancia v. Mayflower Textile Services Co.
United States District Court for the District of Maryland
253 F.R.D. 354 (2008)
- Written by Rose VanHofwegen, JD
Facts
Thirty-nine industrial-laundry workers including Glenda Mancia (plaintiffs) alleged Mayflower Textile Services Company and affiliates (Mayflower) (defendants) violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) by failing to pay overtime and illegally deducting wages from pay. The claimants served broad-sweeping discovery requests. Mayflower responded to multiple requests with boilerplate general objections. Discovery disputes and motions ensued. The magistrate held a hearing and noted the discovery requests might be excessive or overly burdensome given the nature of the case and relatively modest amounts claimed, but the judge could not make that determination without a factual record. Instead, the judge ordered the parties to meet and confer to resolve the discovery disputes and provided a written opinion to guide those discussions.
