Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association v. Ross
United States District Court for the District of Columbia
349 F. Supp. 3d 48 (2018)

- Written by Alex Ruskell, JD
Facts
President Obama designated the Canyons and Seamounts of the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean a protected national monument under the Antiquities Act. The Canyons were in the United States’ exclusive economic zone. Presidents have declared over 157 monuments, including the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. The Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association sued, arguing that the president did not have the power to do so because the proposed monument was under the ocean.
