Movement for Quality Government in Israel v. Knesset
Israel Supreme Court
HCJ 6427/02, 61(1) PD 619 (2006)

- Written by Whitney Waldenberg, JD
Facts
Israel had obligatory military service. A law enacted by the Israeli Knesset (defendant)—the Deferment of Service Law for Yeshiva Students Engaged in Full Time Yeshiva Studies (the deferment law)—made an exception to obligatory military service for certain males who were engaged in full-time religious studies. The Movement for Quality Government in Israel (plaintiff) filed a petition challenging the validity of the deferment law, arguing that it violated the right to equality of all those individuals who were subject to the military draft.
