Facts
An airplane operated by a Chinese company, manufactured by The Boeing Company (Boeing) (defendant), and sold by United Airlines, Inc. (United) (defendant) crashed in Taiwan, Republic of China. The victims killed in the crash consisted of Taiwanese citizens. Chinese and United States authorities investigated the accident. Pieces of the airplane wreckage remained in Taiwan. Personal representatives of the Taiwanese victims (plaintiffs) filed wrongful-death actions against Boeing and United in a heavily congested California district court. Boeing motioned to dismiss the actions on the ground of forum non conveniens.
