National Labor Relations Board v. Retail Store Employees Union, Local 1001 (Safeco Title Insurance Co.)
United States Supreme Court
447 U.S. 607 (1980)
- Written by Tammy Boggs, JD
Facts
Safeco Title Insurance Co. (Safeco) was at a bargaining impasse with the union representing Safeco’s employees. The union initiated a picket of Safeco’s Seattle office as well as five local title companies. Over 90 percent of the local title companies’ business involved selling and servicing Safeco insurance policies. The union’s picket signs asked customers to cancel or stop buying Safeco policies. The National Labor Relations Board (the board) found that the picketing violated the National Labor Relations Act. The court of appeals disagreed. The matter came before the Supreme Court.
