Scott Gomez (plaintiff) was center for the New Jersey Devils (defendant) of the National Hockey League (NHL). At the time of arbitration, Gomez had played six seasons in the NHL. During his rookie season, Gomez won the league’s award for outstanding rookie. Gomez was also a member of the U.S. Olympic Hockey team. Gomez became a restricted free agent and requested arbitration for the purpose of determining his compensation for the next season. The Devils offered Gomez $3.5 million. Gomez sought $6 million.
