Facts
Dr. Channing Nicholas (plaintiff) was fired from his tenured professorship at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) (defendant) after he repeatedly had conflicts with his supervisor. Nicholas brought suit against Penn State, claiming that his firing was arbitrary, irrational, and improper and thus his substantive-due-process rights were violated. The district court dismissed Nicholas’s claim, and Nicholas appealed.
